I think integrated electric propulsion (IEP) is the key. It offers so much flexibility in ship design and power management. We're already seeing it in the Type 45 destroyers and Zumwalt class. The next step is more efficient energy storage to allow for longer silent running.

Don't forget the lessons from the past! The transition from sail to steam was revolutionary. We might be on the cusp of a similar shift. The logistical chain for a new fuel type will be the biggest hurdle.
