Electromagnetic Railguns on Ships: Hype or Reality?

By FutureIsNowJuly 16, 2024

We've seen prototypes and heard a lot of talk about electromagnetic railguns. Do you think they will become a standard weapon system on future warships, or are the power requirements and barrel longevity issues too great to overcome in the near future? Wondering what the community thinks.

The power requirement is the biggest challenge. You essentially need a ship built around the weapon system, which is why we saw it tested on the Zumwalt. I think we are more likely to see directed energy weapons (lasers) become widespread first for defensive purposes.

I think it's a matter of when, not if. The velocity and range advantages are too significant to ignore. The cost per shot is also theoretically much lower than a complex missile. It will just take time for the supporting technology to mature.
